Chelsea took a huge step towards Champions League qualification after a hard fought 1-0 win at the home of the newly crowned Premier League champions.
The game failed to kick into gear with lots of cautious play for most of the match, until the 86th minute when Chelsea’s magician Juan Mata, shot across goal and was deflected via Phil Jones out of the reach of Lingergaard into the bottom corner.
Just minutes later as Manchester United chased the game; they were down to ten men. Rafael was given his marching orders after kicking out at David Luiz by the corner flag as they tussled for the ball. Sian Massey bringing it to Howard Webb’s attention.
The three points for Chelsea sends them back up to third after both Arsenal and Tottenham won their games 1-0.
The result leaves Chelsea 1 point ahead of Arsenal in 4th who have played a game more and 3 points ahead of Tottenham, with the two to meet on Wednesday night, in a contest which will indicate who is likely to steal the Champions League places.
If Chelsea win against Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, it will all but secure Champions League football next year as they have a far superior goal difference.
